Soft Algorithm Performance
Developed in 2017
In this performance I explored the medium of soft-algorithms through the technology of fortune cookies. This performance, created for a photo media class, was performed in a space I felt was idyllic, like a screen saver or computer background. I cracked open cookies from an entire bag of fortune cookies in front of an audience and read each one aloud, dropping the pieces of the cookies around my feet. Each fortune was then sorted into a jar on either side of my body without explanation as to what the jars meant. This sought to investigate the intersections of algorithms and pseudosciences (like fortunes, astrology, aura photography and tarot cards) as they both increase in popularity as ways of shaping identities.
